Shopping replacing other hobbies

 Q. In a very busy routine, shopping is replacing other hobbies. What are the reasons for this? Is it a positive or negative development? Give your views.

In the modern epoch of materialism and competition, shopping has become an unavoidable time passing activity for most people and consequently less attention is paid to other hobbies like painting, stamp collection etcetera. Now, people prefer to go shopping or just window shopping during free time. There are several reasons for such a trend and I believe, it is a positive as well as negative development. I will cast light on this in the following writing.

To begin, there are numerous factors due to which people choose shopping as a leisure time activity. The first reason can be the changing lifestyle of people. Unlike past, when people bought only the necessities, presently, people buy goods to show off and pamper themselves and they are tempted to do so by powerful advertisements. Also, in earlier times, life was simple but nowadays, people are more conscious socially and careful about the way they dress up due to which they frequently need to shop clothes, etcetera to fit in the modern society.

Further, I think shopping has positive effects, for example, it works as a mood elevator. When people feel low or depressed, they feel happy after shopping. Also, consumers play a key role in a nation’s economy. The growth of a country’s economy has a lot of dependency on purchasing power and frequency of purchase by consumers and if shopping reduces, then the country’s financial status is deemed to be in trouble.

On the other hand, there are certain undesirable results brought by this development. The major drawback is that people spend a lot of money in buying unnecessary goods. Many a times, people end up denting their hard earned savings to buy expensive goods which are not really required. In addition, the mental and physical functioning required in this activity is very limited which may lead to physical illness. Also, most shoppers become materialistic and are inclined to brand names and signature items regardless of price and need.

Overall, shopping being opted as a leisure time activity in place of other hobbies has some good effects, however, it must be done within certain limits to avoid the negative effects.

POINTS TO REMEMBER:
Shopping is opted as a leisure time activity // Reasons are materialism, competition, helps in elevating the mood. // The positive aspects are it can boost the economy and make people happy. // Demerits- it leads to wastage, not helpful in mental development // Advisable to be done only in limits.

VOCABULARY: Epoch: era // advisable: suggested // drawbacks: demerits, disadvantages // merits: benefits, advantages

Work essay.

 Q. Work is the most important element in life and in relation to this, it is said and believed by many that life without a satisfying job is meaningless. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Some people say that work is worship and career is the core of life. These statements reflect the high importance that individuals are usually attached to their work these days. However, I differ from this and believe that there is far more to life than just a satisfactory job. I will cast light on my ideas of disagreement in the following writing.

To begin with, no two people are alike and for a lot of people, including me, work is not the only thing that matters. For instance, becoming a nun may not be a very satisfying career options for people but for Mother Teresa, it was all that made her life meaningful and happy. Likewise, for a working mother, the most meaningful achievement might not be her job but the happiness and health of her baby. She may want to surrender everything in order to not miss any part of her child’s life. This shows that all people have their own ideas and priorities.

Moving further, some things in life are priceless. The relationships that we have, the love and affection of our family and the happiness we feel in the company of near and dear ones is more precious than job satisfaction. Old couples living in small houses and looking so content and happy with life even if they have not had very successful careers is a common sight. This is because they are glad to be with each other and experience those beautiful things which no amount of money can ever buy. Another thing that is more important than a well paid and satisfactory job or anything else is good health. It is well known that health is wealth and when it is lost, everything is lost. No matter how prestigious or satisfactory job we have, bad health makes everything worthless.

To wrap up, I would say that job is only a part of life and not the measure of how meaningful life is. A job is only something and not everything and that is, why, people should look at the more important things in life to have worthwhile and enjoyable experiences.

POINTS TO REMEMBER:
Work is worship // Career is a very important aspect of one’s life. // However, there is a lot more to life than just a satisfying job. // One may not have a very reputed career but may have an influence on many, example Mother Teresa. // Other things in life are priceless like relationships and health // Health is wealth, nothing can be possible without good health.

VOCABULARY : Worship: act of paying reverence // surrender: give up // affection: fondness, warmness // priceless: invaluable // reputed: esteemed, respected // prestigious: esteemed, honored // worthwhile: worthy

The social strata are changing and the gap between the rich and the poor is becoming wider, the rich are becoming richer and the poor are becoming poorer. What do you think are the causes of this problem and suggest solutions to tackle it.

 Q. The social strata are changing and the gap between the rich and the poor is becoming wider, the rich are becoming richer and the poor are becoming poorer. What do you think are the causes of this problem and suggest solutions to tackle it.

Income in any society should be evenly distributed to maintain equilibrium in social structure. Unfortunately, this is not the case and the gap between the rich and the poorer is widening. Of course, there is no single factor which contributes to such a situation and there are many reasons for it which are discussed in the paragraphs below with possible solutions.

To initiate with, the contributing factors of such gap, the first is taxation policy of the government which helps the high income group to evade tax. For instance, the government has different tax slabs which make them avail tax exemption like, opening an office in a special economy zone to result in good savings and increase in profit. Another reason for this almost unbridgeable gap is that very few people from the wealthy class use their money for the benefit of the society or for helping those who are less privileged than them. Moreover, unethical activities like corruption and crime also help people to amass enormous amount of wealth.

However, this gap can be reduced by making some efforts. First of all, the authorities should make rules that promote equal opportunity for all sections of the society, if people are working to achieve it. Besides this, the wealthy should have a will to share the extra income, rather than spending fortune on useless things like driving luxurious cars, eating in sophisticated restaurants etcetera. They should be encouraged to donate some amount of charity. Further, heavy taxes should be levied on the affluent class and the money gained should be put to use to improve the life of the underprivileged.

In conclusion, it is undeniable that the differences between the rich and the poor are widening so appropriate and timely steps should be taken before something undesirable happens because “prevention is better than cure”.

POINTS TO REMEMBER:
There is an unbridgeable gap between the rich and the poor. // it is the direct outcome of unequal income distribution // factors like unfair taxation, crime, corruption, self centred attitude all contribute to the issue. // steps like equality, willingness to share, change in taxation can help to lessen the gap.

VOCABULARY: Rich: wealthy // lessen: reduce // widening: increasing // enormous: quite big, huge

Co-education.

 Q. With changing trends in education like all other aspects, co-education is becoming increasingly common. What do you think are the positive and negative aspects of this development?

Change is inevitable. Life goes through a continuous process of change and education is no exception. In ancient times, women were not allowed to receive education and men were sent to schools called Gurukuls. With the passage of time, education became common and males amd females were sent to different institutions. However, nowadays, co-education is gaining popularity, this refers to the boys and girls studying in common schools and classrooms. In the paragraphs further, I will discuss the positive and negative aspects of this trend.

To begin with, co-education is necessary today and there are numerous reasons for the necessity of co-education. Boys and girls think differently, generally boys are logical and girls are emotional, with regular interaction, a better understanding can be formed between them. Also, it generates a healthy competition between them and there will always be appreciation of perspectives, strengths and weaknesses. Moreover, co-education gives confidence to girls as they are treated as equals. This is of great significance in a patriarchal society like ours and it emphasizes the role of education for women. Another great benefit is that friendship, teamwork and mutual respect develops between both the genders as they are involved in multiple activities together and this makes way for open-minded individuals who can easily adapt to the highly globalised society.

However, there are some demerits of co-education. Attraction towards the opposite gender can hamper concentration of students in studies and they may get involved in unethical activities with each other. Besides this, unnecessary arguments may take place due to difference of opinion and it may create an unhealthy atmosphere resulting in negative feelings for each other.

To sum up, I would like to say that like most other things, co-education has both merits and demerits but merits outnumber the demerits and co-education is very beneficial for the betterment of society.

POINTS TO REMEMBER:
Co-education is studying of girls and boys together // In ancient times, only boys were sent to schools // Later, separate schools were there for boys and girls // Nowadays, Co-education prevails // It has several positives and drawbacks // should be promoted keeping in mind its merits.

VOCABULARY:
Co-education: studying of both genders together // patriarchal: male-dominated // benefit: merit, advantages // drawback: demerit, disadvantage
